Histomorphological Evaluation of Rabbit Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue after Tissue Expansion

Abstract
During the past decade, tissue expansion has become a valuable technique in reconstructing a wide variety of soft tissue defects. Although this method has been known and used in surgery for ten years, there were sporadic data in the literature connected with histomorphology of expanded skin and soft tissue and only a few articles on the same subject in experimental animal. These research investigation on expanded tissue do not give enough information for answering many questions.
This study was conducted in order to investigate the histomorphologic and physiologic features of rabbit skin and soft tissue after tissue expansion with the light and electron microscopic analysis. The results were as follows:
1. There was no significant thinning of the epidermis over 9 weeks expansion in the rabbit and no dysplastic or metaplastic changes were seen in the epidermis.
2. In contrast to the epidermis, the dermis and panniculus carnosus muscle showed significant thinning during expansion and the morphology of skin appendages remains in normal.
3. Collagen synthesis was vigorous in the dermis to reconstitute the thickness of normal dermis.
4. In the epidermis tissue expansion elicits a dividend of additional tissue_
5. The fibrous capsular contracture was most likely due to not only inelastic arrangement of collagen fiber but also ;contractile(fibroblast. However author postulated that the former was main contributing factor on capsular contracture.
